Over the years I have found I learn more – not through regular daily classes but through bi weekly or even monthly or quarterly classes. My Europe classes are annual or bi-annual. This means that in a class I have to cover material which is sufficient to last the class for the next “chunk” of time. So I not only teach with the idea of giving them food for thought for a week – I even teach with the idea of giving them “food for thought and body” sometimes — for the YEAR. So I attempt to download a large variety of information and technique and recommended reading materials. This download of information is based on two things; what I observe and the questions the students ask. So it is important that the question is targeted precisely so I can give the students clear directions. I do try to differentiate what is advise for an individual and what is good general practice for most people. Often prescriptive and personal advise is relayed to a group and creates confusion. Two students may need to be working on opposite sides of a training equation. One student might need to do concentration exercises with upper body strengthening and another might need to work on the lower body and more emotional aspects. Some adults have never learned to play. A third student may be working on peace of mind and resolving some trauma of the past through combining swimming with long walks in nature. A fourth may be working strictly and methodically on combat. There is a huge range in the human being for the Wisdom of the Body and simply prescribing the identical thing for the masses to do is good only for slaves and the factory mentality. Even if we all study the same subject we need not study the same aspect or even study in the same way. So part of my task is to present a sufficient variety of material which has “unfolding potential” to a group of students for them to then pick and choose according to their appetite. One of my teachers, Robert Smith was particularly adept at knowing the World of Books as he was a book collector. He often suggested the reading of particular books to go with certain aspects of training. This I found extremely helpful and I think my students do as well.

Thus far in my 30 or so years of experience, the ideal conditions to maintain QUALITY of training -that is the ESSENCE of what you are trying to get across- and the QUANTITY of training-the necessary repetition to REMEMBER a physical form or technique correctly require— Work Groups. What I mean by work groups is a small core of about five people (I PLAY THE SIXTH AS VISITING TEACHER). Why five? well I just have it in my experience that generally if there is more than five someone feels they are being neglected or not seen or not payed attention to. Then there is the resentment and pity party which spreads around the room! So in my experience five is the magic number. Of course I have to teach larger groups. And if they are attentive quality can be maintained. But with five I know I can maintain it. I can maintain eye contact with five people. More than five is really tough cause some people actually need more attention. After that number I find the students themselves must prod themselves awake and they must ask questions and if they feel neglected get me to pay attention to them. “The squeeky wheel gets the grease” as is said. With these five -if I step in- are three pairs of people. So it’s actually a six sided or six aspected thing like a cell in a honeycomb. The six then work in pairs on drilling applications of movements and then branch off to do solo work on their own without worrying about anyone else in the group. That means we work together on something together. With a partner. It’s a very relational thing. If it’s martial arts we look at an application of the move if it’s yoga we look at the structure of the movement–the physiological or emotive meaning.
We do that together and I talk about it while we are doing this. So there are three inputs; one from each partner and mine. And three is the traditional number of synergy or process even going back to the ancient Greeks and is also seen in the idea of Trines in Astrology. This “Trining Process” may be 15-30 minutes. Then we break up the group formation and everybody goes to their own corner and works on it- without input from others for another 10-15 minutes- and I recommend if they are a person who learns through the ears to describe the movement to themselves out loud. This gives them good positive feedback to their own memorization process. If they are a tactical or hands-on learner that is covered during the earlier phases of application. If they are a visual learner chances are they want to SEE me do it again. And I do. Some teachers don’t like to show something over and over because it is a point of pride and the student needs to respect the “vintage preciousness” of the movement! Be that as it may be – the fact is some students actually do learn by seeing. So some learn by seeing, some by hearing some by touching. And all of this can be observed in their earliest years-even preschool- and is often ignored or called “stupid” or “slow” by teachers who happen not to have their learning style!
This is one of the tragedies of so called “Education”.

After these two phases-the “Trining Process” and the “By Myself Process” there are questions and recommended reading so that Motivations and “Forward Looking” can go out of the room WITH the student- and they can have some feeling of doing the new thing they have learned — in the future— and also have the impression that some new things, experiences and ideas will be coming to meet them.

After class the group often ends up going out for something to eat. This is really a helpful thing because when you eat food and digest it -it is easier also to digest new ideas and impressions. The warmth and conviviality assist the whole learning process. So the meal after can be just as important as the training itself and it puts a sort of cap and seal on the process. That is a sort of alchemical overview to how a small class can work. A larger class is possible but you must have assistants who already know the technique or form and then you can do a leader for every five. So if I have four assistants I can maintain quality and actually teach 25–BUT–those leaders must already know the movement, form or position…

I had someone recently write me and explain the difficulties of finance and timing as regards getting to a class. My response to this is to create ONE monthly class usually near a full or new moon since most traditions believe there is more energy available to the human body at that time. So I am beginning that first class in Ellijay on Feb 21st new moon. The format is question and answer and the time is 10am to 5pm with a break for lunch. There is another set for March 19th as well. The point of the class is to catch the optimum TIME when the body is really RIPE to learn. That takes care of the timing issue in that it is only ONCE a month. Tantric Traditions and others make the claim that on a full moon 1000x more energy is available. And on a new moon 10,000. One way to find out is to experiment and see how the students respond to this and feel -in their body- after it. The cost of the class is “put something in the hat”. So nobody gets penalized. I realize I do not live in a convenient place being up in the mountains. The class is not on the weekend because it seems most people are booked on the weekend! so I thought I’d try this. Incidentally I recommend students build up there workouts toward the full moon beginning any new sequence on the new moon. Along with this is easing off on your work- out in the winter and accelerating your work- out in the summer.

I had someone write me awhile back and suggested I write something on “Internal” and “External” martial arts so here are some ideas about that which I hope are useful in making these concepts clear.

In Martial Arts when we say “Inner” it can pertain directly to how you feel emotionally or some physical sensation. So this sort of introverted self considering aspect can lead to Egotism and Fantasy. You can get lost in your imagination of what you feel. If the inner feelings can be compared and contrasted with the outer environment in some sort of systematic way then the Inner Path can be very useful. This way you don’t just fall for anything, mob psychology etc. So this kind of Inner Considering or Inner Sensation can be useful for protecting your physically and psychologically. Some people once they understand how Inner Feelings, Emotions and similar sensations are formed become very expert at the psychological manipulation of others. Then you have something like MK Ultra and various techniques which have been called Psy-ops.

If Inner Feelings actually consider other people and their unique level of development in their time frame and decisions are made to assist that person in their release of power potentials based on their “free will” or choosing then that is another function of the “Inner” or “Internal” aspect of a person; that is the ability to understand or assist others. St. Frances has been quoted as saying “Preach the Gospel always and sometimes even use words”. So sometimes it is best in many conditions and situations to not intervene or suggest. But your presence can speak. So this too can be called “Inner” or “Internal”. Sufi schools mention how the presence of another person can steer a conversation even if that person says nothing.
In the Chinese Language “Inner” or “Nei” means interior. In the house is “Nei bien” or literally “Inner Side”. The term can pertain to domestic, in country or in terms of martial arts something handed down within a family or within a nation or culture. This term came to be used in China in the 1940s by Sun Lu-tang and some of the other more literate martial arts people. Since Ba-gua, Tai Chi, Hsing-I all predate this period the term is not part of their origin. However it points to the fact these arts are Chinese products. Spoken tradition links them to the Wu-tang mountains where it is said Chang San-feng invented Tai Chi chuan.
The term “Internal” was used as a point of contrast with arts created outside of China, namely Shaolin Gung-fu which was understood to be developed from Indian-Buddhist sources and brought to the Shaolin Temple. While there is little to no physical evidence of this it is known that weapons in India had an influence on Chinese weaponry and with this influence there would be preferences for body movements of various types based on the weapons, horses, elephants, tigers, etc. War arts from Tibet, Burma and the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Afghanistan as well as North and South India all influenced China through it’s borders. The Silk Road and Spice Route brought through China a plethora of influences from Religion, Philosophy, Medicine as well as Arts of Metallurgy, textile, fabric and horsemanship . Martial Arts were and are interwoven with all these things. All of these influences could be called “External” or “Wai” that is, influences from outside the borders of China. In fact many of these influences were connected to Buddhism and Islam and so were linked to Shaolin. Influences within the borders of China (Internal Influences) were considered to be those things associated with Taoism and Confucianism. In light of this it is also important to realize that Taoism is in actuality, a kind of Chinese Shamanism less linked to mental abstraction and more linked to the animal kingdom, instinct and Earth.
Huang Po-nien in his ‘Dragon Shape Ba-gua Palm” text states the whole external – internal paradigm was wrong for the simple fact that Shaolin Martial Arts had meditation practices which made them “Internal”. So even in the 1940s these ideas were in debate. The stereotyped version that was coming forward at this time was the vision that Shaolin martial training was superficial and depended on muscular strength which was developed through hard conditioning protocols while the “Internal Arts” used more sophisticated breathing techniques and more flowing movements that were more ergonomic or used a higher level of efficiency. The fact of the matter is these arts overlap and the development of skills in either Internal or External Arts depends upon similar skill sets.
It is clearer for the modern practitioner of martial arts to see Chinese Martial Arts as a body of knowledge consisting of various specializations of techniques and /or conditionings and forms. These specializations of skill and conditioning branch into Hsing-I, Ba-gua, Tai chi and the roughly 400 forms of Shaolin. It may be that Shaolin Gung-fu at one time actually contained all of these arts as it was a sort of pivot location point for practitioners to meet. No Chinese martial art is actually exclusive of another. Bits of one can often be seen in another. Though teachers often stress the uniqueness of each. Teachers are interested in students perfecting a single teaching, not amassing a collection of forms. Because of this many teachers in the present and the past have not promoted exploration of different martial arts. The American contribution, the American attitude to learning to martial arts is distinct here. It encourages the exploration and comparison of methods. In light of the fact that “Styles” or Methods- rather than being mutually exclusive – actually serve different purposes it is more useful to see where these specialization are helpful – helpful for self-defense, health- to enhance human potentials- and then how that can be connected to an integrated psychology. In this way evolving martial arts practitioners are not trapped by ambiguous connotative terms like “Internal” and “External” which have political as well as psychological overtones. In our present Culture of Distraction it is more import to be clear headed and know why we train a specific technique, for whom and with what agendas. It is useful to consider the catalogue of human motivations. This catalogue is the book which is yet to be written. What are your objectives for learning a skill? why? what are the long term effects on you as a person? what are the societal effects? psychological effects? physical effect?

Having been properly chastised for not being very Blogicious I hope to be more regular on this thing and take questions and comments and the rest…one thing that occurred to me was simply putting questions and answers up from various emails as regards training, workshops etc…I get a few questions now and again from readers of the Journal of Asian martial arts as regards my articles and also my own students and peers hit me with pretty interesting stuff which I will post when it hits the right nerve…

First off the Amazon Dance had a partial unveiling at Emory University yesterday so I am interested in hearing how that went…there are nine positions which correspond to Gurdjieff’s Enneagram but the dance choreography is mine based on the necessities of human survival in the period of the Sarmatian Warrioresses…the ladies and I are taping some of the practice sessions so I expect to have “how to” material for those who live far away…

Secondly- my pilgrimage to the sacred sites of Europe is aimed for April next year and then in May I will go to London, perhaps Mancester then across to Brest, France on to Paris and then Zurich and Rome…there will be workshops in each place.

The workshops will be largely based on my own martial and yogic pedagogy called The Scythian Path which derives it’s philosophy from the martial/yogic application rather than visa versa…so in my own pedagogy application practice comes first…then philosophy, idealology and Shamanism… I’ll also work with people on any of the Traditions I am in charge of preserving and consult on physical training…

There will also be – during this trip a lecture in Zurich on the subject of ” 2012″ with a Theosophical group. I’ll mainly be looking at the Astrological side of that in light of historical cycles… I have- over the years- given several lectures at the Theosophical Society of Atlanta and many of those I have also put on DVD…not all the lectures are complete.

My point of view is mainly as one who travels East to West and gathers information and techniques and knowledge as he goes…that is my path…and that is also why my teaching is called the Scythian Path because that is the path they followed from N. Persia into Europe…that is also why-idealogically- I get along well with the Sufi Orders as well as Buddhist and Christian groups. I have to say the work of Rudolph Steiner continues both to amaze and guide me. As Owen Barfield said, “The older I get the more true it seems to be”. Having said that the philosophical content of my teaching has evolved very slowly and went through Christianity and Buddhism -particularly Tibetan Buddhism and then into Sufism

and in particular research on Gurdjieff’s Sarmoun Brotherhood. I am aware some think that the Sarmoun (ie Sarmatian) is an invention of Gurdjieff though the evidence appears to me to present the opposite idea, that it was indeed a real Secret Community in Central Asia. I believe this group has very specific links to Steiners prophet of the Scythians — who he called Scythianos. So one could say my teaching – if you follow the highly vectored insights of R. Steiner- is coming from the overlap of Christian and Buddhist streams which have Scythianos in their midst…of course I have students who also just want to know how to “kick some ass” too! luckily it’s a point to grow from rather than a place to grow to…
