Archery

The Archery I teach is traditional Western archery with a recurve or long bow. My father was my first teacher when I was a teenager. Later in my thirties, I also visited Dan Quillian who at the time had an underground shooting range at his Archery Traditions in Athens, Georgia. I made several visits to Dan and he was very helpful on history and technique. He has done videos on shooting the longbow as well as written articles on hunting with the longbow. Dan’s feeling on Compound Bows is that they are good if you need “training wheels” on your bow! His other comment is this, “I don’t care how strong your bow is, if I can get my arrow in the target faster than you.” And Dan has shot both bear and buck. He was a student of Howard Hill who is, in Archery Hunting circles was considered one of the greatest all round hunters with the bow. Howard shot for Errol Flynn in the movie “Robin Hood”. He also left a nephew, Jerry Hill who was/is? an expert archer and last I heard was producing his own long bows in Alabama.

My own interest in Archery is as a teaching tool for students to learn something about military history and the mythic origins of medicine; the legends of Chiron, Jason and Hercules. So Archery is proving to be helpful with my high school student classes and after school program at Academe of the Oaks private school in Decatur, Georgia.

Project in development

At present I am working on learning to ride horses from Janie Sellers at the Coronet Horse Stables here in Ellijay, Georgia. Eventually Janie and I hope to get classes which will range from Martial Arts; particularly Ba-gua and staff work- to Archery to Horseback riding to Archery – on – Horseback.

FYI- I get my supplies from Three Rivers Archery in Indiana. They have a great site and respond quickly and efficiently to orders.
